APC Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, failed Mathematics in the 1961 WASSCEE, which shows that he is just like the many Nigerian students that find it hard to pass the subject, as shown by the alarming failure rates in WAEC examinations
Muhammadu Buhari, Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) scored F9 in two of the subjects he sat for in the 1961
University of Cambridge West African School Certificate Examinations
(WASCE).
There has been controversy after the
Buhari and the APC said his certificates were with the Nigerian Army
authorities who subsequently denied the claim.
Official documents obtained by Premium Times
from Cambridge University and the Government College, formerly known as
Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, however show that Buhari did
attend the school and sat for the examination in 1961.
The
statement of result, duly signed by the current principal of the
College, dated January 21, 2015, showed that Buhari obtained the
following scores:
- English – 5 (credit)
- Hausa-5 (credit)
- English Lit – 7 (pass)
- History -3 (Good)
- Geography – 6 (Credit)
- Maths – 9 (Fail)
- Health Science – 6 (credit)
- Woodwork – 9 (fail)
Buhari’s candidate number was 002 while that of the examination centre was 8280, in line with a statement he made in Kano on Wednesday, as reported by Punch.
“I
attended Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, now Government College,
Katsina, and sat the University of Cambridge/WASCE in 1961...
"My examination number is 8280002.”
Student
Pulse had earlier reported that a former President of the Court of
Appeal (PCA), Justice Umaru Abdullahi and a former Inspector General of
Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, said they were classmates with him.
One
interesting things about this certificate is that it shows that Buhari,
described as "brilliant" by his classmates, also had a problem with
Mathematics like many Nigerian students.
Every year, there is massive failure of Mathematics and English in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In the November/December 2014 WASSCE, only 29.37 per cent of candidates obtained credits in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language, similar to the 2014 May/June where that approximately 70% of the candidates failed.
